SANT’ANTIMO TOUR
THE STORY OF SANT'ANTIMO
Legend has it that the foundation of Sant'Antimo dates back to the ninth century when Charlemagne, returning from Rome, camped his men struck by the plague near the stream Starcia. Suddenly in the night the emperor appeared in an angel's dream, who advised him to gather a particular herb, make it dried and make an infusion.
Precisely in this way, mysteriously his army healed, so, in thanksgiving for the miracle, he built the Abbey by depositing as a gift the relics of Saints Antimo and Sebastiano.
In 1118 thanks to a substantial donation of Count Bernardo degli Ardengheschi, the Benedictine monks had the opportunity to rebuild their church in a more sumptuous form,
as it is today.
The Abbey can also be visited with guided tours of the Carolingia chapel, the crypt, the magnificent upper loggia, the monastic pharmacy and the vegetable garden of San Benedetto.
